Gundrilling Technology

Users around the world link the name TBT with quality, reliability and customer relations. Since its foundation in 1966 in Germany, TBT has specialized itself in Gundrilling Technology , Gundrilling Machines , and Gundrilling Tools. The only company in the world that has expertise in all three!

Introduction

Gundrilling is an efficient process to drill holes in materials such as steel, titanium, copper, cast iron, aluminum and plastics. The process is highly efficient for drilling deep and short holes, tight diameter tolerances , surface finish quality and minimum run-out . The gundrilling process thereby eliminates the need to ream or hone the drilled bores, and does so with an extreme high repeatability . Another characteristic of gundrilling is that it provides virtually burr free bore intersections, bore entries and exits. A gundrilling system consists of the gundrill, workpiece fixture, drill spindle, coolant filtering, coolant supply, tool, coolant type and drill parameters. Each component in this system is of crucial importance to obtain a good process result.

Tool Technology

Traditionally gundrilling is executed with a single lipped drilling tool. Because of its design, the tool needs to be guided by a bushing during the drill initiation. The single lipped tool is especially appropriate for drilling long chipping materials. For short cutting materials double cutting tools can also be used. The carbide head of the gundrill tool has 1-4

supporting pads which provide the characteristic burnishing effect of the gundrilling tool. The exact position of the support pads has a great influence on the bore and surface quality. The carbide type as well as the nose grind will influence bore quality, run-out as well as tool life. See our Tool Technology page for more details
